The Best Hot Water Cornbread
What is Hot Water Cornbread?
Hot water cornbread is one of those things you can make any time. I’m here to help you make it. Because it’s so good! First thing you should know: It’s not bready or bread-like. These golden patties are more like tater tots, crunchy crust on the outside with an almost creamy center. Sprinkle enough salt on them and you’ll be happy to munch on them plain.
So, let’s go for more in this dish.
How To Make It?
Serving size: 1 piece (equal to 10 Servings)
Prep: 5 mins
Cook: 10 mins
Total: 15 mins
● ¼ cup extra light olive oil or canola oil
● 2 cups yellow cornmeal
● ½ teaspoon salt
● Black pepper to taste
● ¼ teaspoon baking powder
● 1 teaspoon sugar
● ¾ cup to 1¼ cup boiling water
● ½ cup cheddar cheese, finely grated
So, now let’s discuss the steps involved in making this tasty dish:
Step 1: Preheat the oven to 350 degrees.
Step 2: Heat the oil in a heavy skillet over medium heat.
Step 3: Combine the next six ingredients until well blended. Gradually add boiling water, stirring until the batter will form a patty. You may not use all of the water.
Step 4: Use a large spoon as a measure and divide the batter and shape into flat round patties.
Step 5: Lightly brown both sides of each patty in the oil about 1 minute each side and then place in a shallow baking pan. Finish in the oven for approximately 10 to 15 minutes.
Yippee!! It’s Ready……Enjoy
Yes, many people know this recipe but the next recipe which I am going to share is a bit similar to the first one but is better.
●1 cup fine white stone ground cornmeal
●½ teaspoon baking powder
●2 tablespoons vegetable shortening
●½ teaspoon salt, plus more for sprinkling
Steps involved in making this amazing recipe:
Step 1:Whisk the cornmeal and baking powder in a small bowl.
Step 2: Bring the shortening, salt, and 1 ½ cups water to a boil in a medium saucepan over medium heat, stirring to melt the shortening.
Step 3: Add the cornmeal mixture in a slow, thin stream, stirring steadily with a wooden spoon the whole time. When all of the cornmeal has been added, turn off the heat.
Step 4: Stir vigorously, scraping the bottom and edges of the saucepan, until the mixture is firm and slapping against the sides of the pan. The mixture should feel soft and not grainy. Let it cool until you can handle it with your hands.
Step 5: Scoop 1 and 1/2 tablespoons dough, using a cookie scoop if you have one, into your hand and shape into a 1/3-inch-thick patty. Repeat with the remaining dough.
Step 6: Fill a large cast iron skillet with oil to a depth of 1/8 inch.Heat over medium heat until shimmering.
Step 7: Add enough patties to fit in a single layer with an inch between them. You may have to work in batches.
Step 8: Fry, turning once, until golden brown, 4 to 5 minutes per side. You don’t want the oil too hot or the outsides will burn before the inside is hot, so adjust the heat if needed. Drain on paper towels and immediately sprinkle with salt. Serve hot.
