The Best Homemade Eel Sauce Recipe
Eel sauce!! What? I am not going to have that sauce made from eel !
Before you start panicking like this, let me tell you the name might be eel sauce but it is 100% vegan which is made from simple ingredients like sugar, sake and soy sauce.
So, Don’t Panic….
Well ,eel sauce is also known as unagi sauce. This sauce is sweet, salty (savory) and full of flavor.
Eel sauce is best served with sushi and grilled fish but personally I have used it on noodles too and it tastes delicious.
Let’s now take a look at the recipe of creating the perfect, delicious Eel Sauce.
Basically eel sauce has only one simple recipe but here I’m going to share several of the recipes with some variations in each.
So let’s start with the simplest one.
- 1/4 Cup Sugar
- 1/2 Cup Soy Sauce
- 1/2 Cup Mirin
Step 1: Take a small saucepan and add sugar, soy sauce, mirin over medium heat.
Step 2: Mix the ingredients inside the saucepan and after a few minutes lower the heat.
Step 3: Stop when the liquid is reduced to about 3/4 cup.
Your eel sauce is ready.
If you are reading the second recipe that means you didn’t like the first one or probably you know this method of making the sauce.
Don’t worry! I have a second method which will require only 4 ingredients.
Actually the taste is similar to the first recipe. But in my opinion it’s a bit better.
- 2 Tbsp Sake
- 1/4 Cup Soy Sauce
- 1/4 Cup Mirin
- 3 Tbsp Sugar
Step 1: The first step is to gather all the ingredients into a saucepan. Then turn on the heat to medium flame and mix them well.
Step 2: Once the mixture starts boiling reduce the heat to low flame and continue simmering for 15 minutes.
Step 3: Then turn off the heat and let it cool. Just remember the liquid will thicken as it cools.
Then store it in an airtight container.
This kind of recipe is for those people who have a lot of things and a lot of time.
- 200 ml Soy Sauce
- 250 ml Mirin
- 150 gm Sugar
- 100 ml Sake
- 25 ml Water ( 2 tbsp)
- 50 ml Dashi ( 4 tbsp)
Step 1: Put Mirin, Dashi, Sugar and sake into a saucepan. Mix it on high flame.
Step 2: After mixing it wait for a few minutes. Then add soy sauce to the mixture and keep it on high flame.
Step 3: Now reduce the flame and let the sauce (mixture) simmer for 15 minutes.
Step 4: Now that you have waited patiently for 15 minutes add 25 ml water (2tbsp) to the boiling sauce.
Step 5: It’s time for you to remove the pan from the heat and let it cool. Continue stirring to make the sauce more thicker.
Finally, our sauce is ready – after the sauce cools down put it in a sauce bottle or an airtight container.
